Patient Navigators: finding the care and help you need
Going through a test to find out if you have cancer can be scary, and finding out you have cancer may raise even more questions about what to do. Where do you go? How do you schedule an appointment? What should you ask your doctor? How do you understand all of the information you are given? Many hospitals and community agencies have specially trained staff members called “patient navigators.” They can help you steer through the maze of tests, health care providers, and places you will visit as part of your diagnosis and care. A patient navigator can help make sure you get access to the care you need, make sense of the information you are given, and connect you with professionals who can support you and your family. Patient navigators have a variety of backgrounds. They may be social workers, nurses, or others who have been specially trained to help guide you through this experience. If you are already working with a hospital, ask the oncology nurse or social worker if there is a patient navigator available there or if they can refer you to community agencies that offer these services. The navigator can tell you what he or she is able help you with during and after your cancer treatment. Some navigators will schedule appointments for you, others provide emotional support. Most patient navigators know about the resources available, can help you find transportation, and can link you with other professionals in your community. Usually, there will not be a cost to you for patient navigation services. —Patricia Valverde, Project SOL (Survivor Outreach to Latinas with Breast Cancer) (S) = Servicios disponibles en español.
